The founder of packaged tours
British publisher Thomas Cook created the first packaged holiday in Britain in the year 1841, when he organized a train-tour on July 5th for 500 travelers. In Germany, it was Josef Neckermann who pioneered the packaged holiday. At first he organized the trips through his company Neckermann but later founded NeckermannReisen and has been organizing airplane trips for everyone since the 1960’s.
A successful fusion
Since their humble beginnings, both companies have experienced a successful development. In Germany, NeckermannReisen became Touristic and later C&N Touristic after being combined with the airline Condor Flugdienst GmbH. In 2001 the company took over Thomas Cook Holdings Ltd and became Thomas Cook AG. In 2007 Thomas Cook AG merged with the British travel organizing firm MyTravel. Since then, then Thomas Cook headquarters have been located in London. The headquarters for Thomas Cook AG in Germany is in Oberursel by Frankfurt.
